How it works
Every symbology has strict rules about content: an EAN-13 wants 12 or 13 digits, an ITF an even number of digits, a Code 39 only capitals, digits and a few symbols. Here the content is validated before drawing, with each symbology’s real rules, so instead of an incomprehensible technical error you get an explanation of what is missing. We do not calculate the check digit ourselves: BWIPP adds it according to the standard, because redoing it by hand is the fastest way to produce labels the checkout scanner rejects. The quiet zone — the white margin around the code — is part of the standard and not decoration: below a certain width the reader cannot lock onto the code, which is why the default is generous.
