Remove PDF metadata

A PDF carries more than it looks: besides title and author, the software that produced it and — inside the XMP block — often the file path on the creator’s computer, username included. Everything goes, and we show you what was there first.

How it works

Cleaning happens at three levels, and all three are needed: the Info dictionary (title, author, subject, keywords, software, dates), the XMP block on the document and on individual pages, and PieceInfo, the private data Illustrator and InDesign attach to pages. Many tools stop at the first: the PDF reader shows nothing any more, but searching inside the file still finds the author’s name. Here the objects are genuinely removed, not just unlinked, and we do not sign ourselves as the new producer in place of whoever was there. What this tool does not do: it does not anonymise the document. Text, images, comments, attachments and signatures stay where they were — a name written inside a page is not metadata. If a document must be truly anonymous, metadata is only the first step.

Not to a server of ours, not to a third party, never. When you pick a file it stays in your browser’s memory: it is read, processed and written back on your device, and you save the result yourself. There is no path that takes it elsewhere, because there is no server to send it to.
